DRUIDBONE: CAST AN IRISH CIRCLE

A RESOURCE FOR PAGANS WHO WANT TO RITUAL IN THE IRISH LANGUAGE (GAELIC)

CD Cover

The culmination of a five-year project, the Druidbone CD features poetry, music, sounds of nature, and a ceremonial pagan circle casting in the Irish language.

The poems are largely druidic in nature, including works by the great Irish mystic AE, aka George Russell. The music is an interpretation of the poetry and ritual magic utilizing a blend of jazz, blues, drum-n-bass and ancient Celtic drum rhythms, and features human voice, modern traditional Irish samples, as well as ancient Irish, multi-ethnic, and modern instrumentation and sounds.

Originally designed for use as a ritual tool, Druidbone can be used to simply learn the words in Irish to cast a Sacred Space or An Fainne (ring or circle).

It can also be played by individuals working solitaire, or by groves or covens to open a ritual in Irish, then paused while performing other personal or group aspects of ritual, majik and spellworking, then continued to complete and close the ritual. It has also been used as a meditative tool, "to cast a circle in ones own mind", while never physically leaving the confines of the everyday world when it is impossible to be in a more naturally conducive environment for ritual.

The Tracks

Cast an Irish Circle(An Fainne) represents the sound of a pagan ritual opening using modern Irish language, original poetry, and specific references to ancient Irish script, specifically the Battle of Moytura or Cath Maige Turedh An Scel-sa Sis & Genemain Bres Meic Elathan & A Righe.
A common theme in many pagan rituals in the western tradition is the casting of a circle, or the anointment of a sacred space. Practitioners of Druidry, Gardnerian, Alexandrian, and Irish Faery Wicca, Celtic shamanism and many of their derivative spiritual systems engage in this practice which is considered to be ancient and crucial to the beginning of any ritual or ceremony. Most systems include an invocation to the guardians of four elemental kingdoms, water, earth, air and fire and the circle is cast in correspondent quarters; west, north, east, and south, with some variation as to the order of these invocations.
According to script in the first six sections of The Battle of Moytura, the Tuatha de Dannan learned occult lore, witchcraft and druidry in four cities, from the four druids associated with these provincial kingdoms; Morfressa of Falias, Esras of Gorias, Uiscias of Finias, and Semias of Murias. It is believed that these correspond in turn to the four elemental kingdoms, and are invoked, in the Irish language, in Druidbone; accompanied by the composers musical interpretations as well as the actual sounds of the corresponding elements. The piece is repeated at the end of the CD with the invocations presented together with their English translations.

Cast an Irish Circle(An Fainne) opens and closes with the beating of a human heart, and utilises various rhythms throughout, with the use of bodhran, bones, uillean pipes, guitar, harmonica and samples of horn sounds from the bronze age in Ireland.

First Triumph Song, presents three versions of the legendary poem written by the Druid Amergin of the Fair Knee when the Milesians first landed in the land of Erinn in the year of the world 3500. It features a Celtic war drum rhythm and acoustic guitar, and ancient Irish horn samples representing the arbitration between the Tuatha de Dannan and the landing Milesians. Three versions of the poem, one in Old Irish, one in Modern Irish, and its English translation as appears in Dr. George Sigersons¹1897 Bards of the Gael and Gall are recited over the dark, etherical sounds.

Three other tracks feature the poetry of the great Irish mystic AE and Kellys’ jazz/blues interpretations. They are more modern in their approach, and have been described as a somewhat ‘beat’ sound. Track two, is a blues interpretation of AEs’ 1931 poem In Tir Na Nog, A Dream called Happy and Dead and is probably the most ‘straight-ahead’ track in musical terms. The fourth track, entitled Logos; the Universe Revealed in Song, features over thirty samples and bytes of various multi-ethnic sounds; Irish, pan-African, pan-Asian, Pacific, Slavic, classical, jazz, psychedelic guitar and blues harmonica. Track five is a dedication to New York City, a mecca of Irish America, and features two poems by AE; New York (the tracks title) and The Cities recited over a jazz/blues improvisation.

Amongst the many meditative recordings on the market that utilize sounds of nature, ethnic music and alternative arrangements, there are very few Irish interpretations of the western spiritual tradition. Druidbone is intended to give such an interpretation. E-mail me at druidbone@druidbone.com, with comments or wholesale enquiries. You'll have to type the address from your own server, I'm afraid of spiders!

Druidbone was conceived and written by James Kelly in conjunction with Albert Cowan, Director and Engineer of Sonic Studios, Dublin. Kelly is a clinical psychologist by profession, and was president of the Dublin Branch of the Theosophical Society in Ireland from 1998-2000. He has lectured there on such subjects as AE (George Russell), the Druids, and Hawaiian spirituality and mythology. He was ordained a Druid of An Clann Draoidheachta Dannan (Druid Clan of Dana) in 1994, is an active member of the Irish Pagan community, and first presented a live performance of the original An Fáinne demo in Dublin in 1999. He regularly performs in live blues and jazz forums in Dublin and around Ireland and Europe under the pseudonym T-bone Kelly.

Al Cowan has owned Sonic Studios since it was established in 1990. He is also a member of the popular Celtic Rock band Caliban, and tours the European festival circuit with them each year. Sonic Studios produced and engineered their latest album X:AM which has received critical acclaim in Italy and France. Cowan and Sonic Studios have also produced records for several major recording stars including Kate Bush, Don Baker, Donal Lunny, Jane Sibbery and several hundred traditional Irish, rock, jazz and folk performers over the past decade.
